The Mesh Is Lying to You: Why Residuals Aren't Enough in CFD

Would you trust a CFD result that changes every time the mesh gets refined?
That's the real test — not the residual plot.
A mesh independence study runs the same case on three or more systematically refined grids and tracks the number you actually care about: pressure drop, peak temperature, velocity at a defined plane.
If that number keeps shifting as the mesh gets finer, the mesh is still driving your answer — not the physics.
Per ASME V&V 20 (the standard for Verification and Validation in CFD and Heat Transfer), this is a required solution-verification step. The standard codifies it quantitatively through the Grid Convergence Index (GCI), which estimates the discretization uncertainty of your result — not just a qualitative "it looks stable."
But here's what most people get wrong:
Converged residuals are not a converged answer.
A residual target like 1e-5 only tells you the discretized equations have been iteratively satisfied to that tolerance. It says the solver did its job on the mesh you gave it — not that the mesh was good enough to resolve the flow feature in the first place.
Two different errors. Two different checks.
→ Iterative convergence: "Did the solver balance its equations?"
→ Mesh independence: "Is the mesh fine enough to trust the answer?"
And even both of those together aren't the full picture. ASME V&V 20 also requires validation against experimental data before a simulation can be considered trustworthy for real-world decisions.
So next time someone shows you a beautiful CFD result, ask three questions:
What's your GCI?
What quantity did you track for mesh independence?
Where's the validation against test data?
If they can't answer all three, the residuals don't matter.
This is the level of scrutiny AcouBIM applies to every CFD assessment we run internally — mesh independence checked before any number is quoted.
